There’s a good chance that you may have received an email from an unknown domain registration business saying that your domain name is being registered by another business in Asia somewhere. This may also be worded in such a way as to indicate your brand is being ‘stolen’, or that they are helping out in ‘dispute resolution’ and giving you the opportunity to buy the domains before a third party.

Don’t panic, this is a scam. You are being targeted to see if you will buy the Asian versions of your domain name at inflated prices.

The domains they are selling will include:
[your-website-name] .asia
[your-website-name] .cn
[your-website-name] .com.cn
[your-website-name] .com.hk
[your-website-name] .com.tw
[your-website-name] .hk
[your-website-name] .in
[your-website-name] .net.cn
[your-website-name] .org.cn
[your-website-name] .tw

Firstly do not respond to these emails.

Secondly establish whether you are interested in any of these domains. Do you plan to trade in Taiwan or Hong Kong?. Do you want to secure all the Asian country domains? Do your current domain names not give you the coverage/ protection you need?

Unless you are a global brand the answer is most likely ‘no’. You may already have the .com version of your domain, which has global recognition. If you have a .co.uk or similar that is also fine, the fact is whatever your domain name your website is available throughout the world.

If you have any questions or would like to review your domain names please give us a call on 01380 728898. We’re on hand for advice and can register domains for you.
