    WordPress website support service launched

    by Richard

    1 minute read

    Apple laptop on desk

We’re delighted to announce the launch of our WordPress website support service, designed to keep all WordPress sites up to date, secure and performing beautifully. We’ve created a separate website support site to give more details about the service and the packages available.

We’ve been supporting WordPress sites for many years and have developed a cost-effective approach that delivers high-quality support and sophisticated monthly reports. Our reports include a broad array of useful information including updates performed, daily speed and security scans, uptime monitoring, traffic analysis and even search engine ranking.

WordPress is an excellent platform with enormous scope and flexibility, but WordPress sites need regular support to keep them up to date and protection to minimise the chances of being hacked. Malicious attacks are on the rise and there are numerous ways that WordPress sites can be hacked (and sadly countless online tutorials to show people how to do it).

As well as monthly support for standard WordPress sites and those with WooCommerce, we are also offering a handy monthly SEO package and annual website MOT. Check out the new site for full details of the packages, resolutionwebsupport.com.

Is your website security on point?

    by Richard

    6 minute read

Almost every month, another big brand hits the headlines after a cyber attacker identifies and exploits a vulnerability in their website security. From human error to undetected bugs, if there are any loose ends, there’s a good chance a bad actor will find them – and the threat is by no means diminishing.

A breach of sensitive customer data has widespread ramifications. Most critically for brands, it impacts trust.

Trust plays a pivotal role in your credibility – winning it takes hard graft. Losing it? That’s much easier. 81% of us state that trust colours our purchasing choices. If a brand is mired in a scandal or exhibits unethical behaviour, 45% of us would never trust it again, and 40% would stop spending with it entirely. In terms of the bottom line, that’s a body slam.

So, how can you fortify your website security and qualify as trustworthy in your audience’s eyes? Get started with our 6 top tips…

    Run a well-oiled CMS

Your business website likely depends on a custom or off-the-shelf content management system (CMS) such as WordPress to run. In addition to your CMS, you probably put to work add-ons and plugins to enhance site functionality.

Whichever CMS, add-ons, and plugins you’re using, updates will be required as vulnerabilities are spotted, and new features are introduced. Older sites may not be compatible with these updates, becoming ticking time bombs for a data breach and, eventually, totally obsolete.

    laptop with code

To maintain robust website security, you’ll need to continually assess your CMS, plugins, and add-ons for updates, or opt for a new site altogether, when the time comes. You’ll also need top-notch anti-malware software and consummate Distributed Denial of Service (DDOS) protection.

When elements of your site become outdated, the door opens to attackers. Cybercriminals are becoming ever more sophisticated, utilising new technologies to hack one website every 39 seconds. If you want to give your site the very best protection and slam that door closed, it’s vital to install new versions of the tools you use as soon as possible.

    Not pet names for passwords

Human foibles are gold dust for cybercriminals looking to compromise website security.

This is why password management should be one of your first focal points. Over 80% of hacks trace back to compromised credentials – likely helped along by our penchant for easily guessable passwords and complacency replacing them. Your cat’s name is more memorable than an ever-changing string of random characters, right?

grey cat sat on a chair

You can quickly and easily improve website security by using a password manager such as Dashlane, LastPass or 1Password to create unique, complex login details for each user. Make sure every user changes their password frequently, too, however secure it seems.

You can check how secure your password truly is on websites like howsecureismypassword. It’s interesting if you compare, say, a randomly generated 12 character password with one comprised of random words: it reckons ‘y5Kht9ByqrFn’ would take a computer 2000 years to crack (and probably a lifetime for me to try and remember and type it correctly), whereas if you chose some random words, let’s say ‘SproutPigOrange’ with a capital letter for each word and no numbers, this would take a computer 43 MILLION YEARS to crack!

If you want to go one step further, add a number and a special character and then it goes up to 93 trillion years! Secure password – done!

    Avoid too many cooks

Place a cap on user permissions, so only a limited number of people are authorised to access and edit your website. On a CMS such as WordPress, you can customise user permission settings, allowing for varying levels of modification powers from user to user.

Giving your whole team blanket access to your site is a recipe for compromised website security, as should just one member fail to follow set protocol (such as generating sophisticated passwords regularly), a vulnerability is created.

    Backup – constantly

Surprisingly, many businesses have a less-than-airtight backup schedule. A backup of your site empowers you to pivot fast when issues arise, from a hack to a malfunctioning page or function.

Whether you choose to create a manual backup timetable or automate it via a tool or your provider, make sure you save and backup your website often – we recommend daily.

    Signal your website security credentials

As customers become more informed about dubious data harvesting and cyber-attacks increase by the year, website security and privacy are of enormous concern.

You might have the most robust back end in the world, but the user can’t see this. It’s important to signal your website security credentials where people expect to see them, or they’ll likely feel unsafe spending time on your site.

Additionally, a website deemed insecure by search engines such as Google could see its SEO ranking take a hit. With all of this in mind, what boxes should you be ticking?

These days, every website worth its salt has a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate. These are used to encrypt sensitive data such as card and address details so that they can be securely transferred during transactions.
SSL certificates show as a padlock beside your URL on browsers such as Google Chrome.

f you don’t have one, your URL will sit next to the two dreaded words: ‘Not secure.’ After seeing that, few customers will be comfortable inputting their data.

If you have an e-commerce site, your online checkout security also needs to provide the visual safety cues today’s customer is accustomed to. On a basic level, you’ll need:

    • An address verification system (AVS). This helps stop fraudulent payments from going through.
    • A credit card verification value (CVV) form field for those checking out with a credit card. A CVV form field asks customers to input the security code on the back of their credit card – another protective measure against fraudsters.

    Use a pro

A developer with advanced coding skills is a necessity for certain website security tasks. For example, reducing cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities requires expert knowledge. Simply put, this involves combing your HTML code for malicious elements and removing them, in addition to building safeguards into your existing code.

Likewise, preempting and combatting SQL injection attacks – when hackers seize and plunder a database server for sensitive information – is a job for a pro, ranging from executing complex data storage protocols to reducing user permissions and more.

    Investing in your website security

Whether or not you choose to collect and store user data (which, done ethically, can be highly beneficial), it’s crucial to ensure your website is kept secure and up to date by a professional.

Top 5 Brand Design Trends for 2021

    by Richard

    3 minute read

    Pencils lined up

As we know, art imitates life – and so too will the design trends for 2021. After a year in which everyday life as we knew it had to be reimagined – fast – we expect 2021 will see the impact of this mirrored in brands’ marketing and designs.

Here’s our forecast of the top 5 design trends to look out for…

    1. Minimalism

Minimalism is one trend that’s here to stay. This is largely due to customers’ changing relationship with technology and brands, set against a backdrop of intense online competition.

People have grown accustomed to generously spaced, lightning-fast websites that deliver an intuitive user journey; they’ve tired of roadblocks such as incessant pop-ups, waffly content, and over-stuffed menus (check out our thoughts on those here).

Moreover, mobile devices account for roughly half of global web traffic. A vast proportion of us opts to visit a brand’s site via smartphone – even more so during the pandemic. This necessitates a simple design that adapts well to small screens.

Email marketing workflows are quickly becoming a staple of a well-designed customer experience. Sticking to clean, succinct layouts and messaging helps your email command attention in an increasingly noisy inbox.

    2. Going retro

Is it any surprise that we’re all feeling a little nostalgic at the mo? Looking back on rosier times is all the rage right now, and, as a result, we’re seeing a shift towards classic designs.

Many brands are opting for retro serif fonts and colour palettes. Aside from looking beautiful and catching the eye, these vintage styles instil a sense of comfort and trust associated with a bygone era, evoking positive emotions in the customer and capturing their attention.

    3. Eco-consciousness

As environmental awareness continues to grow, sustainably-minded design is establishing itself as the new norm. Our collective reconnection with nature during 2020 and the green impact of lockdowns have only accelerated this.

Customers now expect packaging to be designed with a no-waste philosophy in mind – minimal or zero plastic plus straightforward recycling instructions.

On a broader scale, we predict that more organic, natural themes will seep into brands’ designs this year: softer, earthier tones and textures, illustrations of natural beauty, and hand-drawn elements for a more authentic, human touch.

    4. Immersive imagery

Big names such as Apple have been harnessing the power of hyper-tangible, 3D imagery for some time now – and smaller e-commerce brands are following suit. These images aren’t just impressive signals of modernity: they engage the viewer and powerfully impress a product on the memory.

As the line between physical and digital continues to blur and technology advances, we expect to see brands harnessing even more lifelike visuals to advertise their products – on their websites and within their email marketing.

    hug packaging boxes

    5. Playfulness

We’re all looking for a little levity right now. Subsequently, we reckon fun, creative flourishes will appear in abundance in 2021 designs.

Clever use of geometric shapes in blocked colours, cartoons, and subtle animations will be used to enliven and complement minimalist designs, directing the reader’s attention to critical points, improving readability, and reducing cognitive legwork.

There may also be a move towards intentionally ‘imperfect’ designs, shaped to convey a brand’s authenticity and a touch of maverick thought.

Design trends for 2021… Watch this space

We hope you enjoyed our thoughts on the top design trends for 2021. Art and design are ever-evolving, so who knows what other trends may arise this year – we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled.

  • Transformative e-commerce for Epigenetics

    Transformative e-commerce for Epigenetics

    by Richard

    3 minute read

Successfully navigating the turbulent waters of e-commerce is no easy task.

For starters, you need a great product and a winning advantage. But it doesn’t stop there – not if you want to go big. To reach the next level, you need an impressive website, backed by clever, artfully delivered digital marketing that delivers impressive traffic and meaningful sales conversion.

    The Evolution of Epigenetics

Wiltshire-based company Epigenetics develops and manufactures a unique range of innovative nutrition products and supplements. Their formulas are created using only the purest ingredients and the highest quality equipment, ensuring ‘that the product arriving at your door is as fresh as the ingredients it was made from.’

Building on more than four decades of experience, Epigenetics has become the go-to supplier for a growing network of healthcare practitioners and health-conscious customers the world over.

However, by 2019, they needed real digital transformation. Only a very small percentage of their sales were online and their systems and processes were not integrated. This left an enormous scope for sales and efficiency improvements via intelligent digital systems and effective e-commerce.

So, in mid-2019 we were commissioned to create an advanced e-commerce website to significantly increase online orders and to incorporate their unique processes, boosting speed and efficiency. No small challenge.

    Getting personal

Insightful technical design isn’t restricted to hard logic: it’s emotional. It revolves around the user – what they want, what they need, what they love. After taking the time to understand Epigenetics’s process, customer base, and vision, we proposed a bespoke e-commerce site, based on WordPress and using WooCommerce, with significant custom functionality to integrate their set of requirements.

Our team built a dedicated login area where practitioners and end-users alike could register as customers on the new Epigenetics site. This was twinned with an intelligent custom admin section that housed a virtual credit system, informed by a user’s shopping history and details.

The system allows practitioners to earn commission based on the products they buy, the balance of which can be redeemed against future purchases; this facilitates the automated maximisation of sales, promoting favoured products to customers and then instilling a sense of loyalty via virtual rewards.

To enable the Epigenetics team to continually evolve and progress their level of service, we designed a bespoke application that can pull commission reports off the site, delivering key insights into customer buying patterns.

An advanced prescribing model was also crafted, providing the practitioner base with a free, valuable resource that perfectly complements the brand’s authoritative educational programme.

The result? A website that acts as a vehicle for a deeper, more reciprocal brand-customer relationship – one that pays long-term dividends.

    A smooth operation

This project triggered a seismic operational shift for Epigenetics, calling for their entire system to be migrated from one platform to another.

They were already well-established when they commissioned the new e-commerce site, so limiting downtime on launch day was essential.

A rolling 24-hour sales window and international shipping duties further necessitated the need for a smooth, speedy transition.

    Reaping the rewards

Epigenetics now has a polished, professional e-commerce site that works over-time, all the time, automating sales and forging bonds with practitioners worldwide.

Since the launch of the new site, online purchases have jumped from 15% to 55% of total orders, combined with a rapid rise in overall sales.

In the last analysis, online orders were higher on 16 out of 20 days across four working weeks, streamlining processes and freeing up the telesales team. Impressive, right?

Today, we continue to host and support the website, acting as an outsourced technical team for Epigenetics, adding new scale and functionality to the site as online sales continue to grow.

A truly great example of transformative tech in action, Resolution style.

    • effective development and clarification of the brand style
    • creation of bespoke holiday search functionality
    • custom integration with bookings and payments engine
    • the creation of bespoke offers & discounts area
    • the creation of an interactive canal map which provides local information e.g. pubs, supermarkets and attractions.
